Carpal tunnel syndrome or CTS results in the numbness of the wrist due to swollen nerves. Carpal bones numbering to eight are present in the wrist and a ligament lies across the bones. The carpal tunnel is nothing but the space between the carpal bones and the ligament. Many other tendons and nerves pass through the carpal tunnel to connect forearm muscles to the hands.
Out of all these nerves is a main nerve called the carpal nerve that brings sensation to the fingers! When pressure is caused on this nerve, CTS develops and the person starts experiencing a pain that prickles through the fingers and hands. People involved in writing and typing an old people could suffer from CTS.
In pregnant women also the deviation in volume of flow of blood and bone lubricant liquid in the body could lead to this condition where pressure is put on the median nerve. The area swells causing a burning sensation in the fingers and hands. On all the fingers except the little finger, numbness and pain could be experienced.
Dryness of skin on fingers and hands, pain in the forearm and lack of coordination between finger and hand can also be experienced by pregnant women. If there is lack of grip then the condition can be termed as severe and carpal tunnel treatment will be needed. In either the pregnancy’s third or the second trimester, CTS occurs and after childbirth with a week or two it could disappear. While sleeping, elevation of burning sensation or pain could take place during pregnancy.
The condition is not serious generally; however pain could be reduced by avoiding some kinds of activities and attempting carpal tunnel exercises of mild nature. Massaging palms and fingers and taking of frequent breaks is essential while writing or typing. Excess hand movements should be avoided which is otherwise necessary in certain jobs.
Without the doctor’s consultation, pain killers and medicines should not be taken. While sleeping a special splint meant for the wrist is suggested for use and pain relief. The gynaecologist should be consulted if daily activities are being affected and severe pain is experienced.
A pill could be recommended for quick relief and if needed, after the delivery a simple surgery could be conducted. As a preventive measure salt intake can be reduced to prevent high fluid retention in the body.
